Funeral Arrangements for Chief James Dougherty

Monday, September 26, 2011, 5PM – 9PM Viewing at Saints Cosmas & Damian Church.

Tuesday, September 27, 2011, 9AM – 1020AM Viewing at Saints Cosmas & Damian Church, with a mass immediately following.

Saints Cosmas & Damian Church is located at 209 West 5th Avenue Conshohocken, PA 19428-1698   (Corner of West 5th Avenue & Maple Street)

 Internment will follow at Saint Matthews Cemetery located at the corner of North Lane & Butler Pike, Whitmarsh Township.

Chief James H. Dougherty, “Chief Doc”, age 65 of Conshohocken, retired Conshohocken Police Chief, moved on at noon on September 21st, 2011.  He was born in Norristown on January 31st, 1946 son of the late Matthew H. and Betty (Cowher) Dougherty.  He was the beloved husband of Jane (Bowe) Dougherty for 39 years.  Besides a loving marriage, Jane and Jimmy where literally a part of each other, as Jane gave him her kidney in 2001.

Jimmy graduated from Conshohocken High School Class of 1964, where he played football and baseball.  He was the 1960 Champion of the Annual Conshohocken Soap Box Derby.  He was a decorated and wounded in action Vietnam Veteran in the United States Marine Corps, where he received the National Defense Service Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 star, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1 device.  He joined the Conshohocken Police Force in 1971 working his way up the ranks until he became Police Chief in 1993.  Chief Doc retired as Police Chief of Conshohocken in June of 2009.  Jimmy graduated the Law Enforcement Curriculum at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA in 1991.  He was a life member of Conshohocken Fire Department # 2, VFW Post 1074, Knights of Columbus, F.O.P. 14, Montgomery County Police Chiefs Association, Pennsylvania Police Chiefs Association, International Chiefs of Police and the FBI National Academy.  He has received countless awards and decorations for his selfless service to law enforcement, fire service and his community.  Jimmy, being ever proud of his Irish Heritage, was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Notre Dame Division 1 in Swedesburg, where he was the 2011 Grand Marshall of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Conshohocken.  Many noteworthy people have had the pleasure of meeting and conversing with Chief Doc including Hillary Clinton and George Bush.  Above all, he was a Hometown Boy who loved his family, friends and Conshohocken, “the best damn town in the world” as he put it. 

Beside his wife Jane, he is survived by: a son, James H. Jr., “Jamie”, of Conshohocken; a daughter, Megan E. Marmer and husband Nick of Conshohocken; a brother, Matthew G. Dougherty; and a Grand daughter, Ashleigh Paige; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, sister and brother-in-laws.  Predeceased in life by 2 brothers, Eugene and George H., “Jumbo”.   

Relatives and friends may pay respects on Monday evening, September 26th, from 5-8pm or on Tuesday morning, September 27th from 9-10:20am at Ss. Cosmas & Damian RC Church, 5th Ave. & Maple Sts., Conshohocken.  A funeral mass will commence in the church at 10:30am.  Interment, St. Matthew Cemetery in Conshohocken.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Chief Dougherty’s memory may be made to The Annual Colonial Neighborhood Council & School District Holiday Toy Drive, 107 East 4th Ave., Conshohocken, PA 19428.  Professional services entrusted to the William A. Moore Funeral Home, 708 Fayette St., Conshohocken.
